Enroll while you are still on the department
Online, self-paced. Nights after a shift. Off days. No commute to a week-long bootcamp unless you want one. You will not find one here. We are not that school.

Three to six months part-time is the normal range
The Professional Inspector bundle is 154 hours of qualifying education plus exam prep. Officers who treat off days like a second assignment finish. Officers who dabble do not. Same as anything else you have qualified for.

You sit when the practice scores say you are ready
Five full-length practice exams at 75% or higher on the national exam and the Texas exam. Then you schedule. We do not send people in on a vibe.

Mid-career: pass first, then resign. Retirement-eligible: pension plus your own inspections. Either way you are not asking another agency for a slot.

If you have a pension, you are not replacing a lieutenant’s overtime on day one. You are stacking a second income on a check you already earned. If you are mid-career, you keep department pay through the exam. Year one of inspecting is a ramp either way — referrals, not a full calendar.
Stacking is the point for 20-and-out
Texas plans (HPOPS, DPFPS, TMRS 20-and-out, and the rest) pay a lifetime benefit and leave you too young to sit still. Inspection income on top of that is the honest pitch. Confirm your own DROP, return-to-work, and medical rules with your plan. We do not interpret pensions.
You are not selling siding
You charge a fee for a report. Agents send you work when you are on time, calm, and accurate. There is no draw and no upsell script.
Mid-career leavers: keep the paycheck through the exam
